Lent Devotional - Day 31

Read John 16:1-15.

Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit when he returns to the Father. This is a game-changer. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit filled individuals for a particular task, but now he is going to come and fill every believer.

The Holy Spirit is known as the Spirit of Jesus and here as the Spirit of Truth and as the Advocate. He is the one teaching us and guiding us in our walk with Jesus. The Holy Spirit speaks to us and just as Jesus only spoke what the Father spoke, so he will only speak to us what Jesus is speaking. Here we see a clear example of the Trinity: the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit in union.

The Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus and therefore those filled with the Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus.

Jesus has not left us alone, but is with us through the Holy Spirit. We can speak to the Holy Spirit and he will speak to us. We know that God tends to speak in a still small voice and in order to hear God, it helps that we get quiet and spend time listening and responding in faith to what we hear from him.

It is vital that we read and know the Bible because the Holy Spirit will remind us what Jesus has spoken and he will only speak in alignment with the heart of God. We can know the heart of God through the Bible. As we read, ask the Holy Spirit to help us to see, understand, and make the necessary connections in our lives, and to help us apply it to our lives.

Don’t follow Jesus on your strength alone, but know that we have all the resources of heaven to help us. Ask God for help and in faith move in the power of God. When we are weak, he is strong.

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for the incredible gift of your Holy Spirit! Holy Spirit, teach me and guide me into the fullness of the truth of Jesus in my life. Continue to convict me of all sin and unrighteousness in my life that I may repent and turn to you more. Help me to walk in step with you always.

Please give me the eyes to see and the ears to hear what you are doing and how you are moving in and around me and help me to join you in your work. Give us our daily bread, which is not only physical nourishment, but doing your will in our lives for today.

Thank you for the new life! Thank you for eternal life! Thank you for saving me and loving me! You are so good. Help me to grow in your love and to fall in love with you deeper.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
